Your Responsibility as an Owner

Rental income you earn through DamnTrailers is taxable income. You are solely responsible for reporting all rental income to the IRS and your state tax authority and for paying all applicable taxes. DamnTrailers does not withhold taxes on your behalf.

IRS Form 1099-K

DamnTrailers processes payments through Stripe. Stripe may issue you an IRS Form 1099-K if your payouts exceed the applicable federal reporting threshold in a calendar year. Current thresholds:

  • Federal: $600 or more in gross payments (as of 2024 IRS guidance — thresholds may change)
  • You should receive your 1099-K from Stripe by January 31 of the following year

Even if you do not receive a 1099-K, you are still required to report all rental income on your federal and state tax returns.

Where to Report

  • Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business): If renting trailers is a business activity, report income and expenses on Schedule C attached to your Form 1040.
  • Schedule E (Supplemental Income): May apply if rental activity is passive. Consult a tax professional to determine the correct form.
  • Self-Employment Tax: If your net earnings from self-employment exceed $400, you may owe self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare).

Potential Deductions

You may be able to deduct ordinary and necessary expenses related to your trailer rental activity, which could include:

  • Insurance premiums for your trailer
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Cleaning costs between rentals
  • Depreciation of the trailer
  • Platform fees paid to DamnTrailers
  • Storage fees
  • Registration and licensing fees

Keep records and receipts for all deductions. A tax professional can help you maximize deductions while staying compliant.

Missouri State Taxes

Missouri residents must also report rental income on their Missouri Individual Income Tax Return (Form MO-1040). Missouri's income tax rates range from 2% to 4.95% depending on income level. Contact the Missouri Department of Revenue at dor.mo.gov or a Missouri CPA for state-specific guidance.

Quarterly Estimated Taxes

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal taxes from rental income, the IRS generally requires you to make quarterly estimated tax payments (Form 1040-ES). Estimated payments are due in April, June, September, and January. Failure to pay may result in underpayment penalties.

Record Keeping

Keep good records of all rental transactions, income received, and expenses paid. DamnTrailers provides a booking history in your dashboard. We recommend saving payout records from Stripe and maintaining your own income/expense log throughout the year.
